Mudhut In The Kitchen
For those of you wondering, yes, we are still here. We did take a bit of a break from the whole blogging thing after our kitchen remodel kicked our butts but forget excuses, let’s get back into the swing of things.
If you recall, we concluded our last blog post with the following:
I promise we’ll explain the whole “why are there no chairs at your table” thing soon but in the meantime, what do you think? Isn’t it nice with the added color in the kitchen? Are you a sew-master?
Depending on your definition of “soon” we may be a bit behind schedule on that one so without further adieu here’s the tale.
Before our kitchen remodel, this was what our dining situation looked like.
We’d hung onto the table and chairs from our apartment days and it worked fine at the time but once we rearranged things, widened the kitchen space, and knocked out that wall (epic pic below) the rectangular table just didn’t seem to make sense.
So we snagged this guy from Ikea which we wrote about here.
As you can see from the picture above we just reused our old chairs while we searched for a better set. Something that actually “worked” in our new space.
Well, we finally found them (almost a year later).
These suckers (the mudhut perdana dining chairs) were just listed on target’s site and have the perfect mix of rustic and modern. And to top it all off, they are incredibly sturdy.
We think they contrast nicely with the floors and add some nice weight to the room. What do you think? Anybody else have these?

Kitchen Update: Curtain Problems
When we revealed our kitchen to you, not everything was perfectly finished. One of those things being the curtains. I searched near and far, online and in-store, for curtains to go in the kitchen but could not find any that would work well and fit in the budget.
I was starting to give up but these brown ones really just weren’t cutting it any longer in our brand new beautiful kitchen. I wanted something with some color and a fun pattern. This brings me to the next part of the Curtain Problems story. When Josh is away for work, I always like to try to have one project, small or big, completed when he gets home. Admittedly I think it’s more for myself rather than him, but it is for some reason a motivation for me to get stuff done.
On this particular trip, Josh was gone for quite some time. I was able to get a few small things done around the house and then decided to take on something a little bigger. I knew my pre-made curtain hunt was was out of luck. So I went to Joann Fabric’s and started searching. I was going to have new curtains even if I had to make them myself!!! Many times the projects I do when J is away are kept a secret, but this time I wanted to make sure we were on the same page with the fabric choice.
Here are a few of the options I sent him:

So I bought up all of the fabric they had (and even had to go to another store the next day because they didn’t have enough..) and started sewing. I was able to finish most of the project in one night with some other crafty friends while we watched girly movies.
Now a quick disclaimer.. I am NOT a sew-master. If you have a sewing machine, and can sew a straight line, you can make curtains too! Essentially all I did was sew a rectangle to the size I needed. I debated sewing a top pocket for the rod to slide in but decided to use curtain clips instead for easy opening and closing.

I was feeling slightly adventurous and made a valance for the sink window with extra fabric. Since this one pretty much stays stationary, I did sew about a two inch opening for the rod to slide into (not as hard as it may look!). So here are my finished products.

Happy New Year!
I know, I know… It’s been awhile since we posted anything DIY. It seems that after all of our kitchen shenanigans we really just needed a break from the housework. But we do have some projects up our sleeve for the new year so just hang tight. We’ll be back in full swing soon enough.
In the meantime, enjoy this little New Years video that we put together with some friends that came by for our New Years Eve party. Let me tell you, I may be biased but…it was a blast.
2013 was a great year. Here’s to an even better 2014.
